I T ' S A B O U T T H E J O U R N E Y . . .
We are freelance adventure writers and photographers based in the great state of Alaska.
Our mission is to hike into the no-kidding wilderness and haul out the very best adventure and travel stories. We beat the lethargy out of them and turn them into humorous, sometimes educational, other times tongue-in-cheek publications and presentations.
Our philosophy is simple. We believe that hard work, a positive attitude and a strong spirit of adventure produce cosmic results.
Community service and outreach activities remain a high priority for Adventure Write. We actively support
anti-DUI initiatives and champion
military appreciation efforts.
We're working hard to encourage the next generation of adventure writers by participating in outreach events, sponsoring a
free writing contest and providing a venue for young writers to publish their work online.
Visitors can find out more about our kid's page
here.
We constantly update and add pages to our website, so check back often for cool things like our online magazine (coming in 2009) and additions to our
kid's page.
...We're Adventurers
So, what is an adventurer anyway? Let's take a look in the Adventure Write dictionary:
- Adventurer -
One who advents. e.g., Indiana Jones. One who embodies the spirit of curiosity , courage and a healthy respect for his environment; one who has ever said, "Are we really going in there?" and has then grabbed a flashlight and gone in.
Adventures have led us all over the world. From Antarctica to Alaska and from the Last Frontier to the Final Frontier, our expeditions last a matter of hours or consume months on end. The only thing they all have in common is that they are all uncommon.
...We're Writers
You wouldn't think an engineer could be so creative, but Colleen has written several articles, short stories, letters, speeches and technical papers and has authored numerous presentations. She was a speech writer and editor for an Air Force General.
For a pilot, Billy O is surprisingly articulate. Forget what you hear over the airline intercom...this guy actually has personality. He has written several short stories, articles and technical papers, and he's given numerous presentations during his career with NASA and the Navy. He also wrote regularly from space in a
mission blog hosted by NASA.
But, what are a thousand words without a picture? Quite often our Adventure Writers use photography to complement their work. Billy O's photos from space have been highlighted in magazines and newspapers worldwide.
...We're Aviators
Our Adventure Writers love to fly. While Colleen prefers wings that go round and round, Billy O likes his fixed in place. Trained by the best, he's flown everything from gliders to float planes, and from F-18s to the Space Shuttle.
Billy O was bitten by the aviation bug in 1979, when at 14 years old, he flew his first solo in a glider. Aviation Fever set in, and he never recovered. He has now logged over
4000 hours in nearly 60 types of aircraft, including over 200 carrier-arrested landings and over 300 hours in Space
as the pilot of the Space Shuttle Discovery.
